Summer Reading 2010
Children's Wrap-Up
For six weeks the participants in the Gleason Library's Summer Reading Program have "Gone Green at Your Library through a wide variety of programs, crafts and most importantly, children's literature. From learning about weather in a fun way, observing and hearing about rain forest animals, and laughing with a magic show, the children learned about their world and the importance of keeping it green. Fifth, and sixth graders tie-dyed, third and fourth graders decorated go green flowerpots and 1st and 2nd graders completed delightful woven fish.
These activities provided the framework for the real focus of the program- summer reading in a relaxed and fun environment. Special reading awards were earned by third-grader Lee Tang, fourth-grader Ellen Su, fifth -grader Peter Yang and sixth- grader Namita Chandra. Milissa Fellers, Cassandra Malik and Marty Seneta made the program happen with help from the enthusiastic library staff. Many thanks to the Friends of the Gleason Library who provided the funds for all performers supplies, prizes, and refreshments.
Check Out a Robot!
Last year Zippy the Martian visited the library and went on trips around Massachusetts, the United States, and the world with Gleason Library patrons. Zippy had a blast. He was hoping to return, but duty calls. Instead, he has sent his robot to visit in his place. Zippy sent a message for you to introduce his robot. Unfortunately, some of the words were lost in transmission from outer space. Read Zippy's message and figure out what he wanted to tell you. Click here to read Zippy's message (PDF)
TTobor the Robot is still available for checkout! Take Tobor with you as you have fun this summer. Snap a picture of the robot anywhere - the beach, camping, even your own backyard! Email your pictures to ica@mvlc.org to be shared in our Flickr gallery.
Summer Reading for Adults and Teens - 7th grade and up
In an effort to boost teen participation in the 2010 Summer Reading Program, "Go Green at Your Library," the library expanded its program offerings to include 7-12th graders. Events for teens included:
- Opening meetings for tweens entering grades 5-8 and for teens entering grades 9-12.
- Two Go Green Bag craft programs for teens entering grades 7-12.
- Closing parties for tweens entering grades 5-8 and for teens entering grades 9-12.
The library also held random weekly prize drawings for teen participants. Winners were able to select a free book! The lucky winners were:
Monica Chen
Amanda Li
Whitney Cook
Lee Bernstein
The decision to offer programming for teens appears to have paid off since teen participation in the summer reading program almost doubled from last year! Once again, teens were the most voracious readers in Carlisle over the summer, reading a total of 44,342 pages.
A special congratulations to our top three teen readers!
Elisabeth Sorrows, the top reader for the second year in a row, read a whopping 6101 pages!
Sarah Means read 5553 pages.
Sam Heinrich came in a close third, reading 5466 pages.
Thanks so much to all the teens who participated in the program and who volunteered at the library this summer!
And finally, in our adult summer reading program, Anne Boudreau was the top reader, with 4221 pages. Altogether, adults logged 25,900 pages read and submitted 52
reviews! Our lucky drawing winners were Sumiko Courtney and Melissa Chen! Congratulations and thank you to everyone who participated and came to our events.
